About the garden

This garden was started in the spring of 2009 with the hard work the Garden Committee, Friends of Christie Pits group, and all of the community volunteers. We’re located at Bloor St. and Christie St. Toronto, Canada, in the park, beside the basketball courts.

We continue to use our energy to produce nutritious food and learn about our diverse strengths.

Volunteers

We are entirely volunteer run and supported. If you’d like to volunteer just approach anybody who is working in the garden on that day and ask if you can lend a hand. If you want to contact somebody about  helping out,  just write to CPCGTO@gmail.com with the subject “VOLUNTEER“.

Plots

We are currently at capacity for personal plots. If you’d like to sign up for the wait list, just write to CPCGTO@gmail.com with the subject “WAIT LIST “. This is a community initiative, not an allotment garden.

We are an organic food garden, but also produce beautiful flowers and useful pollinator plants. Space is made for people who want to grow food but do not have space to grow at home, and who live near to this park.

We produce a variety of vegetables and some fruit. Our most reliable plants have been beans, broccoli, cabbage, chard, carrots, corn, cucumber, eggplant, peppers, lettuce, okra, strawberries and zucchini.

Community

We are dedicated to productive relationships with organizations in the community and plan on creating programs for gardeners of all ages and abilities. Our paths are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs.

We are dedicated to passing on knowledge of healthy gardening. We often host workshops and learning sessions about food production and sustainable organic principles. If you have experience you may want to consider volunteering your time to teach others.

Tools

Gardening tools are available for all to use, and are kept in the shed. We rely on generous donations of working tools and hoses by all members of our community, including local businesses.

Neat!

Upon digging into a downtown city park, we found that the ground begins with sod, about two feet of sand, a layer of red bricks, and finally gray-brown clay. For gardening this kind of earth is THE PITS!

Our garden relies on about 6 ‘yards’ of healthy planting soil per year. To date our soil has been city planting compost provided by Toronto Parks. We do maintain a large supply of compost, and welcome vegetarian kitchen scraps from nearby homes.
